Why Volunteer at the Municipal Library of Liginiac?

In an era of hyper-individualism and digital detachment, volunteering in a rural municipal library offers a deeply fulfilling experience of grounded community solidarity. When you welcome a young child picking out their first picture book, help an elderly neighbor discover a fascinating historical novel, or carefully repair a torn spine of an ancient cadastral record, you are directly nurturing the social fabric of our village.

The Association des Amis de la Licorne currently brings together 38 volunteers of all generations: retired school teachers, working parents, students, farmers, and recent newcomers to Haute-Corrèze. Our volunteers are not employees and face no commercial quotas; we collaborate in an atmosphere of warmth, mutual respect, and intellectual conviviality.

Public Welcome & Lending Desk

Welcome readers during Wednesday afternoon or Saturday morning opening hours. Assist patrons with check-out and check-in using our intuitive computerized barcode scanner, register new reader cards, and recommend your favorite books.

Book Accession & Protective Covering

Process newly purchased books: stamp municipal ownership, apply decimal call number stickers, and cover paperbacks with durable transparent plastic film. A relaxing, tactile craft that preserves our municipal collection for years.

Senior Home Delivery & Reading Aloud

Visit housebound elderly residents living across outlying rural hamlets to deliver requested large-print books, graphic albums, or audiobooks. Spend twenty minutes conversing and reading chapters aloud to brighten their week.

Digital Literacy & Archival Scanning

Assist older patrons with digital questions on tablets during our twice-monthly digital clinics, or help our historical archive committee scan and catalog vintage photographs and local history manuscripts.

Orientation & Volunteer Training Provided

You do not need to be a literary scholar or a professional librarian to join our team! Every new volunteer is paired with an experienced mentor for their first three shifts. You will learn how our catalog is organized, how to navigate the loan software, and how to handle damaged books with archival tape.

In addition, the association finances attendance at free professional training modules offered by the Bibliothèque Départementale de la Corrèze (BDC) in Ussel and Tulle, covering topics such as children's literature selection, modern graphic novel culture, and storytelling techniques.
