Cultivating Practical Skills, Artistic Expression & Autonomy

Literacy is far more than passive reading; it is the active capacity to express ideas, preserve knowledge, and manipulate the physical and digital tools of communication. In rural communes, where commercial vocational training centers are non-existent, the municipal library becomes the natural home for participatory adult learning and community skill-sharing.

The Association des Amis de la Licorne organizes structured, non-commercial civic workshops led by volunteer craftspeople, retired educators, and passionate local residents. Every workshop is designed to be accessible to beginners while providing genuine depth for advanced participants. We believe that learning is an egalitarian communal dialogue where every participant brings unique life experience to the communal worktable.

The Four Core Workshop Tracks

Our annual workshop schedule encompasses four distinct skill domains, meeting monthly throughout the autumn, winter, and spring seasons:

1. Traditional Bookbinding & Paper Restoration

Learn the sacred heritage of book crafts. Facilitated by experienced amateur bookbinders, participants learn to stitch paper signatures, reinforce broken hinges using archival linen tape, craft custom paste-paper covers, and build protective clamshell cases for fragile family heirlooms.

2. Creative Writing & Autobiographical Circles

A supportive space to discover your personal written voice. Through playful prompts, sensory exercises, and mutual encouragement, participants write poetry, short fiction, and personal memoirs reflecting life on the Haute-Corrèze plateau. No prior writing experience required.

3. Digital Literacy & E-Administration Clinics

Conquering digital isolation. Patient volunteers offer step-by-step assistance in operating smartphones, tablets, and computers. Topics include securing personal passwords, using public healthcare and pension portals, and downloading digital e-books from the departmental library service.

4. Oral History & Field Audio Recording

Become an active citizen historian. This workshop trains volunteers to formulate respectful interview questions, operate broadcast digital audio recorders, transcribe recorded dialect testimonies, and index local memory files for deposit in our municipal archives.

Inclusive Pedagogy: Respectful, Patient, and Community-Centered

Many adults who struggle with writing or technology carry painful memories of rigid academic testing or fear looking foolish in front of peers. Our volunteer facilitators establish an atmosphere of deep psychological safety, warmth, and mutual respect where questions are celebrated and every small victory is honored.

For our digital clinics, we operate with a strict 1-to-1 or 1-to-2 volunteer-to-participant ratio. Rather than lecturing at a whiteboard, facilitators sit beside each resident at their own pace, guiding their hands as they manipulate touchscreens or keyboard shortcuts. We provide large-type printed cheat-sheets with visual screenshots so participants can replicate the steps independently at home.

Complete Schedule & Free Registration Details

Workshops are held in the reading hall of the Bibliothèque Municipale of Liginiac on alternating Thursday afternoons (14:30–16:30) and Saturday mornings (10:00–12:00).

All tools, paper stocks, bookbinding needles, archival adhesives, tablets, and writing stationery are provided entirely free of charge by the association using our annual municipal cultural grant. Participants are never asked to purchase supplies or pay enrollment fees.
